Day 2
Getting ready for Iceland
Day 2 started rainy again, but small patches of sun were starting to appear by the time we made it to Gullfoss falls in the morning, and sun continued to get more prevalent throughout the day. The highlight of the day was a 4-mile round trip hike to Bruarfoss falls, which consisted of a lower, middle and upper falls along the way. The blue color of the water in the river was incredible and with many small bubbles at many places. The upper falls was the true Braurfoss and consisted of a fissure down the middle of the river that had most of the falls. The plants along the way included a stunted native birch, one of the only native trees, lush Angelica, and a purple wild geranium with leaves that were starting to turn red for fall.
The next stop (B) was at Pingvellir National Park, which is mostly a heritage site where the Viking parliament met from C.E. 930 to 1798. Nothing really left to see of that but it is also a very pretty place. This location is on the main Mid-Atlantic rift that is expressed by a large fissure with a waterfall over the upper lip feeding a creek that runs in the rift before exiting its lower edge. Day 3 was a beautiful sunny day with even better sights - coming tomorrow.
