Day 7
Getting ready for Iceland
Day 7 was a long driving day from the Westfjords to the northern part of Iceland. The day was mostly cloudy and raining with a few holes with sun momentarily. This was the first time we had gravel roads for extended sections, which with the rain got our car quite mud-covered. The day mostly involved checking out cultural sites.
The first stop (A) was at the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft, which was pretty hokey, and mainly about the witch trials and burnings in Iceland from the 1500s to the early 1700s, about the same time as the Salem witch trials in America. Almost all of those convicted were men. Further down the coast we spotted many shorebirds including very cute Pigeon Guillemots at stop B. At stop C there were nice views across the fjord with old houses and a church in the foreground. Stop D was at yet another waterfall (Kollufoss), where we had lunch in the car while hoping the rain would calm down, but to no avail. Stop E was during a small period of clearing in a mountain valley. We ended the day at Glaumbaer Farm (stop F), a cultural site where there is a museum of an old farm made of furnished sod houses that were occupied for over 900 years.
