Day 9
Getting ready for Iceland
Day 9 started out rainy but cleared a little by Stop A at Godafoss, another large falls. From there we continued to Namafjall, a geothermal area that had a geothermal power plant and also has an area of mud pots, sulfur deposits and fumaroles. We experienced freezing cold rain and wind there. Nearby was a lava tube cave with blue hot water in it, that was used as a setting in the Game of Thrones TV series. Next, we visited Lake Myvatn and walked around at the south end to look for birds (only slightly successful) in an area called the pseudo-craters, which look like tiny cinder cones but are the result of steam (phreatic) explosions produced when hot lava contacts ground water.
After checking out that area, we drove to Husavik (home of the main characters in the movie Eurovision Song Contest), where we spent the night in a great guesthouse with a view of a 10:30 pm sunset over the mountains and fjord. We also went to GeoSea, a beautiful developed hot pool site where sea water is geothermally heated and piped into the baths that are infinity pools overlooking the fjord. The sky cleared while we were there and led to a blue-sky Day 10.
