Day 1
Catching up on posting for the first day in Iceland. It was a very long day, arriving at Keflavik Airport at 6 am (11 pm PDT) after flying east overnight. We flew over Baffin Island (first picture below) and southern Greenland with the sun just below the northern horizon. The real trip started with a quick stop at the Bridge Between Continents (location A) where you can walk across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the European and North American plates. This was our first encounter with a very rainy and foggy day.
From there we headed to a small community park (Hellisgerdi) in Hafnarfjordur (location B) to get acquainted with some Icelandic culture at a small “elf village” in a suburb of Reykjavik. From there it was off to the Golden Circle and Geysir (location C), the origin of the name Geyser. Quite a popular destination similar to the geyser basins at Yellowstone. Unfortunately, Geysir is basically dormant, but Strokkur geyser goes off for a short burst every 10 minutes or so. Also, there are some nice hot pools there. The rain was steady but intermittently pouring all afternoon.
The final stop was another very popular site - the falls at Gullfoss (location D). Very wet experience when adding the thick mist from the falls to the rain. I felt the need to go back there on the morning of the second day to try to get some shots without water all over my lens. The day ended with a nice long soak at the hot pool at Secret Lagoon, a few minutes from our tiny room in Fludir. There was also a small geyser that went off next to the lagoon every so often. Enjoy the pix, I will be posting more soon from Day 2, which was a much better weather day.
