Day 3

Getting ready for Iceland

Day 3 Route with photo locations marked

The third day was fabulous weather on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The day started with a visit to Gerduberg Cliffs (stop A), which is a cliff made of giant basalt columns, some of the biggest in diameter I have seen. This indicates that the basalt cooled very slowly. We visited the Black Church at Budir (stop B), which is a reconstructed church from 1847 (and said to be the most photographed church in Iceland). The main event for the day was a hike from the village of Anarstopi to the village of Hellnar (stop C) on a very beautiful stretch of coast with many nesting birds, including Kittiwakes and Arctic Terns. The terns are feeding their young fledglings now, and it turns out they are doing so right ohn the main road between our apartment in Hellissandur and Kirkjufellsfoss (stop D), making the cars almost stop to avoid hitting them.

Tomorrow will be sights along the north coast of the peninsula.
